Andrew Young Presents “The Color of Money” Screening

Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to attend a special screening of “Andrew Young Presents: The Color of Money”, a documentary presented by The Andrew Young FoundationOperation Hope and the Hyatt Regency Atlanta.

The documentary focuses on the history of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his role in launching the Poor People’s Campaign – a push for economic justice in the late 1960’s, in order to alleviate poverty for all people, regardless of race.  The film follows the continuation of King’s work infused within the initiatives and partnerships of Operation HOPE, a non-profit organization which offers free financial education programs and resources.

Ambassador Andrew Young, a respected politician, diplomat and civil rights legend, is entertaining and transparent as he narrates history, shares his personal accounts as a leader in the movement and interviews participants and contributors in this multi-layered collection of stories and insights.

The documentary shares common money management struggles by featuring everyday working people and their journey from financial stress to financial confidence in connection with services offered by Operation HOPE.  The nonprofit has successful collaborations with key partners like SunTrust and First Tennessee Bank, which has increased their footprint within communities to educate individuals on topics including credit, homeownership, and business development.

With so few spotlights on financial education, tools and resources, I recommend watching this film and using it as a conversation starter among friends and family.  As a financial education instructor and coach, I was inspired by the film and further affirmed that the mission of The Master Playbook remains critically important to help transform the financial health and wellness of our communities.

In picking up where Dr. King left off, documentaries like “The Color of Money” and the work of organizations like Operation HOPE and The Master Playbook can all play a role in carrying the responsibility for economic justice through financial education.  When coupled with compassion and a servant’s heart, King’s legacy will surely live on and inspire change for generations to come.

The Color of Money” will air in syndication on more than 200 stations nationwide and will air locally in Atlanta, GA on Sunday, December 30, 2018 at 5 p.m. on WSB-TV.
